讲座主要内容
Status shocks are found to generate positive or negative consequences for recipients, but their spillover effects on equally skilled peers have rarely been discussed. This study examines how status-enhancing certifications granted by government influence the volume and novelty of the knowledge created by the recipients’neighbors. Drawing on the High-Tech Enterprise Certification program initiated by the Chinese government, we test the peer effect of status shocks using a longitudinal dataset of Chinese publicly listed firms covering the period 2003 to 2020. We find that noncertified firms operating in proximal domains and same geographic locations experience substantial increases in patent applications when more government certifications are granted. Moreover, we suggest that these firms engage in more exploitation than exploration. We further explore the role of the agency of the status shocks and find that the peer effect of government certifications is more pronounced for provincial governments that allocate more policy attention to innovation issues and whose leaders are younger. Our work enriches our knowledge of status shocks and the peer effect by clarifying the interplay between political and market dynamics.
