讲座主要内容

This study investigates the impact of private messaging on job outcomes in online labor markets. We examine whether job seekers who send private messages to potential employers are more likely to be hired initially and rehired in the future. Leveraging detailed platform data, we explore how these effects differ between new job seekers with no prior experience or ratings and experienced workers with verified histories. Our findings show that private messaging significantly increases both the likelihood of initial hiring and the future probabilities of being rehired. Importantly, we find that messages that mention or negotiate pricing or specify the time needed to complete the job are particularly effective in securing offers. Furthermore, private messaging can partially offset the disadvantages faced by newcomers due to missing reputation signals, helping them bridge informational gaps and gain traction on the platform. These results highlight the critical role of direct communication in shaping market outcomes and offer practical implications for platform design and job-seeking strategy.
